About the Project

The modernization of Elbert Elementary School was a critical project to address the needs of an aging school facility originally built in 1962. Given the deteriorating conditions, outdated infrastructure, and potential asbestos concerns, the decision was made to completely modernize the campus to provide a safe, modern learning environment for students. The project involved demolishing nearly the entire existing school and rebuilding it with state-of-the-art facilities, including brand-new classrooms, science labs, a closed-circuit television (CCTV) studio, a media center, and an early learning center. The new campus features two-story buildings covering more than 97,363 square feet and includes a cafetorium, a full kitchen, paved play courts, and two playgrounds tailored to different age groups. The modernization project, costing approximately $50 million, was funded by impact fees and a half-cent sales tax referendum.

This modernization effort significantly enhances the educational environment for the growing student population in Polk County, one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation. With a projected increase in student enrollment, the new Elbert Elementary School will expand its capacity from approximately 625 students to 1,602 students, ensuring that the school can accommodate the community’s growth. The new facility not only meets modern safety and sanitary requirements but also integrates advanced technology and infrastructure, providing students with the best possible foundation for their education. The project represents a crucial investment in the future of Polk County’s educational system, ensuring that Elbert Elementary can continue to serve its community for many years to come.
